Why Nevada is one of the fastest-growing mechatronics markets in the US

Nevada's manufacturing economy transformed over the past decade. Tesla Gigafactory Nevada in Sparks employs 7,000+ building Model 3 and Y batteries plus Semi truck powertrains, with ongoing expansion. The broader Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center (TRI) is one of the largest US industrial parks at 107,000+ acres, anchored by Tesla and growing rapidly with Switch SuperNAP data centers, Panasonic, Walmart and Amazon distribution, FedEx, and dozens more tenants. Redwood Materials in Carson City (founded by Tesla ex-CTO JB Straubel) runs battery recycling at 1,000+ employees. Lithium Americas Thacker Pass is bringing lithium mining and processing to northern NV.

For mechatronics technicians, Nevada is among the fastest-growing US markets. Tesla alone hires hundreds of equipment technicians per year for ongoing Gigafactory expansion. Switch hires for data-center MEP automation. Redwood Materials hires for battery recycling automation. Demand exceeds local supply, which has driven TMCC and WNC certificate enrollment significantly upward since 2020.

TMCC + Tesla Manufacturing Development Program

Tesla Gigafactory Nevada partners with TMCC on the Tesla Manufacturing Development Program (MDP), a workforce development pipeline where Tesla pays for selected employees to complete 11 credits of TMCC mechatronics coursework in a 4-week intensive format. Over 1,000 apprentices have completed the program. The MDP runs continuously as Tesla expands Gigafactory operations.

TMCC's three standalone certificates are open-enrollment alternatives. The Advanced Manufacturing and Automation Certificate is the full 12-month credential. The Fundamentals of Smart Automation Certificate is a shorter 6-9 month entry point. The Industrial Programming and Controls Skills Certificate is a 3-6 month focused PLC credential. All three stack into the TMCC Automation and Robotics Manufacturing Technologies AAS for students who continue.

WNC + Siemens SMSCP: the western US Siemens partnership

Western Nevada College is the only school in the western United States partnered with Siemens through the Siemens Mechatronic Systems Certification Program (SMSCP). Carson City and Fernley delivery locations. WNC offers two certificates: the 8-week Mechatronics Foundation Skills Certificate (fast-track to SACA C-102 Certified Industry 4.0 Associate II) and the 12-month Mechatronics Technology Certificate (includes SMSCP-aligned coursework).

Why SMSCP matters: Siemens automation equipment dominates significant portions of US industrial automation (Tier-1 auto, food processing, pharmaceutical, semiconductor). SMSCP credentialing carries weight in hiring decisions at Siemens-platform employers. WNC graduates carry a credential alignment advantage when applying to those employers.
