How Many Credits Are Required for a Mechatronics Degree?
There is no single credit requirement for every mechatronics degree. Current examples range from Greenville Technical College’s 36-credit certificate and 74-credit AAS to Wake Tech’s 71-credit AAS, Kennesaw State’s 124-credit EAC bachelor’s, and Michigan Tech’s 30-credit MS. These examples show how requirements differ by credential; they are not national minimums.

What Are the Admission Requirements for a Mechatronics Degree?
Mechatronics admission requirements can include a high school diploma or GED, math placement, prerequisite science courses, a minimum GPA, or upper-division engineering standing. Institutional admission and readiness for the first technical course are separate requirements.
Certificate and Associate Mechatronics Admission Requirements
Greenville Tech’s 2026-27 Mechatronics I certificate lists a high school diploma or GED as its entrance requirement. Its first term still includes AC/DC Circuits I and algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. The official certificate plan shows why applicants should check math placement and course prerequisites even when institutional admission does not require prior college coursework.
Bachelor’s in Mechatronics Admission Requirements
A four-year university can admit a student before the engineering major grants upper-division standing. Kennesaw State’s 124-credit BS in Mechatronics Engineering requires a 2.7 GPA in selected math, science, and engineering courses before upper-division work. The current Kennesaw program page calls this Engineering Standing. When comparing bachelor’s programs, find the equivalent gate and ask what happens if a required course must be repeated.
Master’s in Mechatronics Admission Requirements
Master’s programs usually evaluate prior coursework as well as GPA. Michigan Tech requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent and evidence of preparation for advanced study. Its admitted applicants typically have a 3.0 undergraduate GPA or better, but the page describes that GPA as typical rather than a universal admission rule. It also lists three recommendations and no GRE requirement. Check the program-specific requirements, then ask which undergraduate gaps trigger bridge courses.
Which Mechatronics Course Prerequisites Can Delay Graduation?
A semester grid shows when a course is offered. A prerequisite map shows what can delay graduation. Request both, especially when Calculus I, Physics I, Circuits I, programming, or engineering standing is required before several later courses.
What Math Is Required for a Mechatronics Degree?
Mechatronics math requirements range from technical algebra and trigonometry in some certificate and associate programs to calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra in engineering bachelor’s programs. Check the starting placement course, the highest required math course, and the technical classes that depend on each prerequisite.
- Technical arithmetic and measurement. Unit conversions, tolerances, ratios, dimensional analysis, and reading instrument values show up early in technician curricula.
- Algebra and trigonometry. These support circuit relationships, vectors, mechanical motion, AC waveforms, fluid power, and basic control calculations. ETAC’s associate-level criteria explicitly set algebra and trigonometry as the applied math floor.
- Precalculus. This can be a destination in an associate program or a bridge into the engineering calculus sequence. Wake Tech identifies MAT 171 Precalculus Algebra in its mechatronics course requirements.
- Differential and integral calculus. ETAC bachelor’s curricula include calculus or other mathematics above algebra and trigonometry. EAC mechatronics curricula require both differential and integral calculus.
- Differential equations and linear algebra. Current EAC mechatronics criteria name both. They support dynamic-system models, state-space methods, robotics, and controls.
- Probability, statistics, and numerical methods. The exact requirement varies, but these tools matter for measurement, quality, sensor data, reliability, modeling, and advanced controls.
Placement below the first required math course may add a term or summer class. Transfer credit labeled “college math” may not satisfy a specific calculus, differential equations, or linear algebra requirement in an EAC curriculum.
Which Courses Are Required for a Mechatronics Degree?
A mechatronics curriculum normally combines mechanical systems, electrical systems, controls, and computing. Course titles vary, so check whether the required sequence moves from component-level skills to designing, programming, testing, and troubleshooting an integrated system.

The EAC criteria cover the same broad system boundary but add more explicit modeling, analysis, and engineering-design requirements. Compare the required courses with electrical engineering and robotics engineering if you are choosing among those majors. Electrical engineering usually requires more advanced electrical theory and systems coursework. Robotics engineering may devote more upper-division coursework to perception, planning, autonomy, and robot software.
How Many Lab Hours Are Required for a Mechatronics Degree?
There is no universal weekly lab-hour requirement for every mechatronics degree. A three- or four-credit course can still require substantially more scheduled time. Greenville Tech lists MEC 130 Motor Controls as a four-credit course with three lecture and three laboratory hours. Its four-credit MEC 299 Research in Advanced Mechatronics lists twelve laboratory hours. The official course descriptions show why credits and contact hours must be checked separately.
Colleges calculate lecture, lab, studio, and independent work differently. Check the following for every technical term:
- Scheduled lecture and lab contact hours, not only credits
- Open-lab hours and whether an instructor or technician is present
- Required software, laptop specifications, tools, personal protective equipment, and consumable fees
- Team size for PLC, robot, motor-control, and instrumentation work
- Whether students wire, program, calibrate, test, and troubleshoot equipment individually
- How often required lab courses are offered and what happens after a missed lab
To evaluate a required mechatronics lab, ask which tasks each student performs, how instructors introduce equipment faults, how performance is measured, and what completed work can be shown in a portfolio. The program should be able to name the equipment, student tasks, and assessment method.
How Does ABET Accreditation Affect Mechatronics Degree Requirements?
ABET accredits programs, not an entire school. In our current inventory, 24 program records carry an EAC tag and 27 carry an ETAC tag. Verify the commission for the exact degree and campus in ABET’s database because a university can offer accredited and non-accredited programs side by side.

Kennesaw State identifies its BS in Mechatronics Engineering as EAC-accredited. Its program page lists mechanics, electronics, robotics, instrumentation and controls, programming, and system design. Will Mechatronics Degree Credits Transfer to a Bachelor’s Program?
ABET requires accredited programs to maintain policies for accepting transfer students and awarding appropriate credit. It does not promise that a particular AAS course will replace a particular engineering course. The receiving institution still evaluates content, level, lab scope, grades, recency, and residency requirements.
Greenville Tech states that its Mechatronics I and II certificate courses apply toward its AAS, but transfer between institutions requires a separate evaluation. An applied AAS may fit an ETAC bachelor’s completion route while leaving calculus, calculus-based physics, and engineering-science gaps for an EAC bachelor’s.
How Can You Verify a Mechatronics Degree 2+2 Transfer Pathway?
- Ask for the signed, current articulation agreement and its expiration date.
- Match your exact sending credential, catalog year, receiving major, campus, and delivery format.
- Request a degree audit showing credits applied to the major, general education, electives, and credits not accepted.
- Check minimum grades, course-age limits, portfolio review, and residency credits.
- Map prerequisites by term. Sixty accepted credits do not guarantee junior standing if they miss the critical sequence.

ABET says all accredited programs are evaluated against the same criteria regardless of delivery method. It also warns that “online” is not always well-defined and that the share of online content changes. ECPI’s 124-credit online Electronic Systems Engineering Technology bachelor’s provides one current example. The ABET-ETAC-accredited program describes online simulations and lists separate lab courses for circuits, instrumentation, digital systems, PLCs, robotics, physics, motor drives or microcontrollers, and the senior project. Its official online curriculum confirms that online delivery can still include explicit lab requirements. Other programs may use different lab formats.
What Should You Ask About Online Mechatronics Lab Requirements?
- Is the activity simulation, remote control of campus equipment, a home kit, a local partner lab, or an in-person residency?
- Which hardware is included, rented, purchased, or supplied by the student?
- Can the student perform wiring, calibration, fault isolation, and safety checks, or only watch a demonstration?
